About Udemy, Inc.
Udemy, Inc. operated an online learning marketplace where independent instructors published courses on subjects ranging from programming and business to design and personal development. The company was founded in 2010 by Eren Bali, Gagan Biyani and Oktay Caglar and was based in San Francisco, California. Its consumer marketplace let learners buy individual courses, and its instructors set their own content and pricing within platform rules.
Over time Udemy expanded beyond consumers into workplace training. Udemy Business offered curated course libraries and subscription access to employers, and became the company's growing revenue source relative to the consumer marketplace. The company reported tens of millions of learners and a catalog of well over one hundred thousand courses in dozens of languages.
Udemy completed its initial public offering on Nasdaq in October 2021 under the ticker UDMY. Hugo Sarrazin became chief executive in 2023, succeeding Gregg Coccari, and the company focused on enterprise subscriptions, improved profitability and adding artificial intelligence features to its learning products. Its competitors included Coursera, LinkedIn Learning, Skillshare and other online learning providers.
In December 2025, Udemy and Coursera announced a definitive agreement to combine in an all-stock transaction valued at about $2.5 billion. Each Udemy share would convert into 0.800 shares of Coursera common stock, which Coursera described as a premium of about 26 percent to the average closing prices of the two stocks over the preceding 30 trading days. On a fully diluted basis, Coursera stockholders were expected to own about 59 percent of the combined company and Udemy stockholders about 41 percent.
The combined company is led by Coursera chief executive Greg Hart, with Andrew Ng as chair of a nine-member board that includes six directors from Coursera and three from Udemy. It is based in Mountain View, California, and trades under the ticker COUR on the New York Stock Exchange. The companies projected about $115 million in annual run-rate cost synergies within 24 months.
The transaction closed on May 11, 2026, and Udemy filed a Form 25 with the SEC on the same date to remove its common stock from Nasdaq. The companies said both platforms would operate separately on the first day, with no immediate changes to access, subscriptions, pricing or certificates. Udemy shareholders hold Coursera stock as a result of the exchange.
