Tax brackets explained

A tax bracket is the rate applied to the highest portion of your income. For example, with taxable income of $100,000 in 2025 a single US filer is in the 22% bracket, so another $100 of income adds $22 of federal tax — but the average rate on the whole income is only about 16.9%, because the lower portions are taxed at 10% and 12%. Seeing both numbers helps you understand how a raise, a bonus or an extra deduction changes what you owe.

The program estimates federal income tax on taxable income only. It does not include state or provincial tax, payroll taxes or credits other than those shown, and is not a substitute for tax preparation software or professional advice.

Frequently asked questions

Which tax years does the calculator cover?

Tax years 2016 to 2026 for both the United States and Canada. The program starts with the previous calendar year selected.

What is the difference between the marginal and the average tax rate?

The marginal rate is the rate on your last dollar of taxable income, the bracket you are in. The average rate is your total federal tax divided by your taxable income. It is lower because the first parts of your income are taxed at lower rates.

Does it include state or provincial tax?

No. It estimates federal income tax only. State and provincial tax, payroll taxes, capital gains rates and credits other than those shown are not included.

How is Canadian federal tax calculated?

Tax is calculated with the federal brackets for the selected year, minus the basic personal amount credit, which every taxpayer gets. Other credits, such as CPP and EI contributions, are not included.

Which US filing statuses are supported?

Single, Married filing jointly, Married filing separately, Head of household and Qualifying surviving spouse.

Does the program need an Internet connection?

No. The tax tables are built into the program and it makes no network calls.

Is Income Tax Calculator free?

Yes. It is freeware for Windows 7, 8, 8.1, 10 and 11, 32-bit and 64-bit.
