About UBS AG ETRACS NYSE Pickens Core Midstream Index ETN due August 20, 2048
PYPE was an exchange-traded note issued by UBS AG under its ETRACS brand. It tracked the NYSE Pickens Core Midstream Index, which measures the performance of US and Canadian midstream energy companies that own pipelines, storage terminals and processing plants. The index was developed with the involvement of the investment firm associated with oilman T. Boone Pickens and included both master limited partnerships and corporations.
As an ETN, PYPE was an unsecured debt obligation of UBS. Holders received a return linked to the index, including distributions, minus fees, and took on UBS credit risk. The notes were scheduled to mature on August 20, 2048 and began trading in August 2018.
The ETN struggled to gather assets, especially after the steep drop in energy stocks in 2020. On May 8, 2023 UBS announced it would exercise its right to call the notes. The call measurement date was June 13, 2023 and holders were paid the call settlement amount on June 16, 2023. After the redemption, the notes were removed from trading and no longer exist.
