iShares Europe Developed Real Estate ETF (IFEU)

The iShares Europe Developed Real Estate ETF was an exchange-traded fund that gave U.S. investors exposure to listed property companies and real estate investment trusts in developed European countries. It tracked an index of European real estate stocks from the FTSE EPRA Nareit family. Its largest weights were in the United Kingdom, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Sweden and Switzerland, and it held around 90 companies.

The fund was launched in 2007 under the name iShares FTSE EPRA/NAREIT Developed Europe Index Fund and later adopted the shorter Europe Developed Real Estate name. It was run by BlackRock's iShares business. Holdings included owners of offices, shopping centers, warehouses and apartments across the region, along with property developers. The fund did not hedge currency risk, so its returns also reflected moves in the euro, pound and other European currencies against the dollar.

The ETF stayed small compared with broader real estate funds, with assets usually well under $100 million. Investors who wanted international property exposure tended to use larger global or international real estate ETFs instead. Low assets and modest trading volume made the fund a candidate for closure as BlackRock reviewed its product range.

In 2020 iShares announced that it would close and liquidate the fund. Its last day of trading was August 17, 2020, and remaining shareholders received cash equal to the fund's net asset value. Investors who want European property exposure today can use broader international real estate ETFs that include Europe.
