About Spectrum Control, Inc.
Spectrum Control designed and manufactured electronic components and systems that control electromagnetic interference, condition power and process signals. Its products included EMI filters, microwave components, power management systems and sensors. Most of its sales went to military and aerospace contractors, with the rest to industrial, communications and medical equipment makers.
The company was based in northwestern Pennsylvania, near Erie, and traded on the Nasdaq Global Select Market under the symbol SPEC. It grew over several decades by developing custom, high-reliability components and by acquiring smaller specialty manufacturers. Defense programs such as radar, communications and electronic warfare systems were important end markets.
In early 2011 Spectrum Control agreed to be acquired by API Technologies, a defense electronics company. API offered $20.00 per share in cash, and the deal closed on June 1, 2011, after which Spectrum's shares were removed from Nasdaq. Spectrum became a major part of API Technologies, which was itself taken private by J.F. Lehman & Company in 2016.
The SPEC symbol was later reused by Spectaire Holdings Inc., a maker of air quality monitoring equipment that listed on Nasdaq after a SPAC merger in 2023. Nasdaq delisted Spectaire in August 2024 and its shares moved to the over-the-counter market under the same symbol.
