MFRM operated over 3,500 stores in 49 states, including stores under various brand names such as Mattress Firm, Sleep Train, and Sleepy's. The company offered a broad selection of mattresses from leading manufacturers, as well as a range of bedding accessories such as pillows, sheets, and mattress protectors.
In 2016, MFRM was acquired by Steinhoff International Holdings N.V., a global retail conglomerate based in South Africa. Following the acquisition, MFRM became a subsidiary of Steinhoff and was delisted from the NASDAQ stock exchange.
In 2018, Steinhoff faced a major accounting scandal that resulted in significant losses for the company and its subsidiaries, including MFRM. As a result, Steinhoff was forced to restate its financial statements and faced numerous legal challenges. The impact of the scandal ultimately led to significant financial difficulties for MFRM, and the company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2018.
