About Decibel Therapeutics, Inc.
Decibel Therapeutics was a clinical-stage biotechnology company developing treatments for hearing loss and balance disorders. Its lead program, DB-OTO, was a gene therapy designed to restore hearing in children born with profound deafness caused by mutations in the otoferlin gene. The company also worked on regenerative approaches aimed at restoring hair cells in the inner ear.
Decibel went public on the Nasdaq market in February 2021 under the ticker DBTX, raising money to advance its pipeline. DB-OTO had been developed in collaboration with Regeneron, which contributed technology and research support, and the program entered clinical testing in children.
Like many young biotech companies that listed in 2021, Decibel saw its shares fall well below the IPO price as investor appetite for early-stage drug developers faded. The company reduced spending and concentrated resources on its most advanced gene therapy work.
In August 2023 Regeneron agreed to buy Decibel for $4.00 per share in cash plus a contingent value right that would pay additional cash if DB-OTO reached specified development milestones. Regeneron completed the tender offer and merger later in 2023, Decibel became a wholly owned subsidiary, and its shares were removed from Nasdaq.
