About Innovator Premium Income 10 Barrier ETF - April
The Innovator Premium Income 10 Barrier ETF - April was an exchange-traded fund from Innovator Capital Management, a sponsor known for defined-outcome products. The fund launched on April 3, 2023 and was listed on the Cboe BZX exchange under the ticker APRD. It belonged to a family of premium income barrier funds, each tied to a set outcome period that began in a specific month.
The strategy aimed to pay a high level of income over a roughly two-year outcome period by selling options linked to large US equity indexes and holding Treasury securities as collateral. In exchange for that income, investors accepted downside exposure if the reference index fell past a 10 percent barrier by the end of the period. Above that barrier, the fund was designed to return the investor's principal plus the stated income.
In February 2025 Innovator announced it would close four April-series funds, including APRD, at the end of their outcome periods. The other three were XDAP, HAPR and APRQ. The outcome period for APRD ended on March 31, 2025, which became the last day shareholders could sell on the exchange. Closing at the end of an outcome period meant shareholders were not left holding the fund midway through its designed structure, and the sponsor avoided resetting a small fund for a new period.
Trading was halted on April 1, 2025, and the fund was liquidated on April 4, 2025, with remaining shareholders receiving cash equal to net asset value. Innovator continues to offer other buffer and defined-outcome ETFs that use similar option-based structures. Shareholders who still held APRD at liquidation received the payment through their brokerage accounts, and the ticker was retired from the exchange after the distribution was completed.
