About Stock Building Supply Holdings, Inc. (later BMC Stock Holdings, Inc.)
Stock Building Supply was a lumber and building materials distributor based in Raleigh, North Carolina. It supplied framing lumber, trusses, wall panels, millwork, doors, windows and related installation services mainly to professional home builders and remodeling contractors. The company traced its roots to a regional lumber business founded in the early twentieth century and for many years was owned by the British distributor Wolseley before it was sold to private equity firm Gores Group after the housing collapse.
After restructuring under Gores, the company returned to the public market. Its initial public offering was priced on August 8, 2013, at $14.00 per share, and its common stock began trading on the NASDAQ Global Select Market under the ticker STCK the next day. The offering included 7 million shares, part sold by the company and part by existing holders. Gores remained the largest shareholder after the listing.
In 2015 Stock Building Supply agreed to an all-stock merger with Building Materials Holding Corporation, a privately held supplier known as BMC that operated in western states. The deal closed on December 1, 2015. Stock Building Supply was the legal surviving company, renamed BMC Stock Holdings and headquartered in Atlanta, and it initially kept the STCK ticker. The combined company served about 42 metropolitan areas in 17 states, mostly in the South and West.
As part of consolidating its brands under the BMC name, the company changed its NASDAQ ticker from STCK to BMCH effective June 6, 2016. The same shares continued to trade under the new symbol. BMC Stock Holdings grew through acquisitions and investment in prefabricated components such as trusses and wall panels, which help builders cut on-site labor and shorten construction schedules.
In August 2020 BMC agreed to merge with Builders FirstSource, its larger rival. The all-stock combination closed on January 1, 2021, with each BMC share converted into 1.3125 Builders FirstSource shares, and BMCH was removed from NASDAQ. The combined company, which trades as BLDR, became the largest supplier of building products to professional builders in the United States, and the former Stock Building Supply operations are now part of it.
