About SMART Technologies Inc.
SMART Technologies was a Calgary company best known for the SMART Board, an interactive whiteboard that became a fixture in classrooms around the world. The company was founded in 1987 by David Martin and Nancy Knowlton and released its first interactive whiteboard in 1991. It also sold interactive flat panels, classroom software and collaboration products for business meeting rooms.
SMART completed a large initial public offering on Nasdaq and the Toronto Stock Exchange in July 2010, raising more than $600 million. The stock fell sharply after the IPO as education budgets tightened after the financial crisis and competition from lower-cost interactive displays and tablets increased. The company cut costs, sold off some businesses and refinanced its debt.
In 2016 SMART agreed to be acquired by Foxconn, the Taiwanese electronics manufacturer that already produced much of its hardware, in a transaction valued at about $200 million. The deal was completed in 2016 and the shares were delisted from Nasdaq and the TSX. SMART continues to operate as a privately held subsidiary in Calgary, selling interactive displays and software for schools and businesses.
