MELA - MELA Sciences, Inc

MELA Sciences, Inc logo MELA Sciences, Inc. was a medical technology company that developed and marketed a non-invasive diagnostic tool for the early detection of melanoma, a type of skin cancer. The company's main product was MelaFind, a handheld device that uses multispectral analysis to capture images of skin lesions and analyze their cellular and structural characteristics to determine the likelihood of melanoma.

MelaFind received clearance from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2011, but the company struggled to gain widespread adoption of the product due to its high cost and concerns about false positives and unnecessary biopsies. In 2013, MELA Sciences sold the MelaFind business to the medical technology company, Strata Skin Sciences, for $42.5 million.

Since then, MELA Sciences has been inactive, and its stock is no longer listed on any major stock exchange. As a result, investing in MELA Sciences is no longer possible. However, the company's history highlights the challenges of developing and commercializing innovative medical technologies and the risks associated with investing in small medical technology companies that may struggle to gain widespread adoption of their products.
