Express Scripts Holding Company, also known as ESRX, is a healthcare company that provides pharmacy benefit management services, as well as home delivery pharmacy services to consumers, employers, health plans, and government health programs. It was founded in 1986 and is headquartered in St. Louis, Missouri.
The company operates in two segments: Pharmacy Benefit Management (PBM) and Other Business Operations. The PBM segment is responsible for the management of prescription drug benefit programs on behalf of clients. This includes the administration of drug benefits, negotiation of drug pricing with manufacturers, management of drug formularies, and claims processing. The Other Business Operations segment includes services related to the distribution of pharmaceuticals and medical supplies, as well as other healthcare-related services.
ESRX has a vast network of pharmacies and healthcare providers that it works with to provide its services. As of December 31, 2017, the company managed pharmacy benefits for approximately 83 million members through its commercial, Medicare, and Medicaid programs.
In March 2018, Express Scripts was acquired by Cigna Corporation, a global health service company. The merger has created one of the largest healthcare companies in the world, with a combined market capitalization of approximately $124 billion as of February 2019.
