The company was founded in 1980 by Bharat Desai and Neerja Sethi in Troy, Michigan, and was headquartered in Michigan until it was acquired by Atos S.E., a multinational information technology service and consulting company based in France, in 2018.

Syntel's services included application development, maintenance, and modernization; cloud and digital services; cybersecurity and risk management; data analytics and management; enterprise architecture and integration; IT infrastructure management; and robotic process automation. Its clients included major companies such as American Express, State Farm, FedEx, and Walmart.

In July 2018, Atos announced its acquisition of Syntel for $3.4 billion, making it Atos' largest acquisition to date. The acquisition aimed to strengthen Atos' digital portfolio and expand its presence in North America, particularly in the banking, finance, and insurance sectors. The acquisition was completed in October 2018, and Syntel became a wholly-owned subsidiary of Atos.

Overall, Syntel had a successful history as a provider of IT and business process services, serving a wide range of clients across industries. The company's acquisition by Atos further solidified its position in the market and expanded its capabilities to meet the growing demand for digital transformation and IT services.
