Janus Henderson International Sustainable Equity ETF (SXUS)

The Janus Henderson International Sustainable Equity ETF was an actively managed fund that invested in companies outside the United States judged to contribute to a more sustainable world. Its managers screened out businesses with harmful activities and looked for firms benefiting from long-term trends such as cleaner energy, efficiency, health and safety, and the shift to a circular economy. It held a few dozen stocks.

The fund began trading on NYSE Arca on September 9, 2021 under the symbol SXUS. It was a listed version of a sustainable international equity strategy that Janus Henderson runs in other vehicles, and it charged an expense ratio of 0.60 percent. It was designed for investors who wanted foreign stocks with a sustainability screen. It was among several sustainability ETFs the firm offered.

Interest in ESG equity funds cooled in 2022 and 2023, and SXUS held only around $7 million in assets. Janus Henderson closed the fund in 2024; its shares stopped trading on NYSE Arca in October 2024, and the remaining assets were distributed to shareholders in cash. The fund's small size made its costs hard to cover, and many ESG products across the industry were closed in the same period.

Shareholders who sold before the final trading day received the market price, while those who held until the closing received their share of the liquidation proceeds. Janus Henderson continued to offer sustainable strategies in mutual funds and other vehicles, and investors who want international exposure with an environmental, social and governance focus can choose among many other listed funds tracking ESG indexes.
