How to download historical stock data on Windows

  1. Choose the data: on the Download Settings tab select EOD or Intraday under Quotes Type, then a Data Server and a Data Range.
  2. Choose the format: check the Data Output Folder and the date and time format. Set the file extension to .csv so Excel opens the files directly, or check MetaStock for a MetaStock-ready layout.
  3. Add symbols: on the Portfolio tab click Add, or click Open to load a saved symbol list. Data > Find Symbol looks up a ticker by company name.
  4. Download: click Update. Each symbol is saved to its own file. Double-click a symbol to view its data in Notepad, or choose Data > Open Data Folder.

When you need historical stock data

  • Price history in Excel: one comma-separated file per symbol with date, open, high, low, close and volume.
  • Intraday history: 1-minute bars for the last day or the last 7 days, or 5-minute bars for the last 5 days, depending on the data server.
  • Data for your charting software: ASCII files for MetaStock, SuperCharts, TradeStation, Advanced Get and Elliott Wave Analyzer.
  • A whole index at once: up to 1000 symbols in one symbol list, such as the NASDAQ-100.
  • Daily updates without clicking: the -auto command line option opens a symbol list and downloads it, so Windows Task Scheduler can run it after the market closes.
  • Indices, international stocks and cryptocurrencies as well as US stocks and ETFs.

How do I download historical stock prices to Excel?

On the Download Settings tab select EOD, a data server and a data range, and set the file extension to .csv. Add your symbols on the Portfolio tab and click Update. Each symbol is saved to its own comma-separated file that Excel opens directly.

Can I download intraday historical stock data?

Yes. Select Intraday under Quotes Type. Depending on the data server you get 1-minute bars for the last day or the last 7 days, or 5-minute bars for the last 5 days.

How many symbols can I download at once?

Up to 1000 symbols in one symbol list. For more symbols, split them into several lists and update them one by one.

Can I schedule a daily download?

Yes. Run the program with the -auto option and the path of a symbol list file. It opens the list, checks all symbols and starts the download with the current Download Settings, so you can run it from Windows Task Scheduler after the market closes.

Do I have to pay for the data?

No. Quotes are downloaded from free internet sources, with no subscription or data fees. The program itself has a one-time registration fee of $49.95.

Does Historical Quotes Downloader run on Windows 11?
