FirstMerit Corporation (FMER) was a bank holding company based in Akron, Ohio, that operated FirstMerit Bank. The bank offered a range of financial products and services, including personal and commercial banking, investment services, and insurance.
FirstMerit was founded in 1845 and grew through a series of mergers and acquisitions over the years. In 2016, the company was acquired by Huntington Bancshares Incorporated (HBAN), another Ohio-based bank holding company, in a deal valued at approximately $3.4 billion. The merger created a regional bank with a footprint across the Midwest and Northeast United States.
Following the acquisition, FirstMerit Bank was rebranded as Huntington Bank, and the former FirstMerit branches now operate under the Huntington name.
